If you want a bichir, I'd get a bottom jawed species and provide him with many hiding places. Cichilids sometimes pick on polys.

i personally won't mix cichlids with anything else. bichirs!! they're really entertaining, but wouldn't really get people going "wtf's that?!" a knife-fish would actually be a pretty gd idea. hardy and cheap.

Vampire tetra is damn ugly... probly get too big eventually though.

There are some big ugly puffers out there too.

If you had a huge tank I'd suggest a mystus wyckii. Not so much ugly as viscious.

my lfs has many of these in stock!!! they are about 25 a piece and at about 6-10 inches and i live in NJ so im sure u could find one in New England if u looked hard enough
