Finally, after about 15 months in my care, a pair of Crenis that I brought home with me has spawned, it was on Sunday morning. I am very excited, although this is not the first spawn from Crenicichla while in my care, I am particularly happy about this one because I caught them with my own hands (well. . . net).
A little about the setup, they are in a 78" x 20 x 20 with a 30gal sump as filtration. My water is very hard and sits at pH 8.0 (or so), it is very stable and rarely fluctuates, the temp is just under 80F at this time, they have had no heater all winter, the temp was slightly under 70 at that time, I would have liked to get it down further, but, my basement is too warm apparently
. Their main diet is Xtreme 3mm pellets and they get night crawlers and chunks of raw market shrimp a couple times a week. I believe that the trigger for this spawn was a water change after missing a week, in essence, they went for two weeks in between water changes rather than the usual weekly one. This has worked for me with other Saxatilis type pikes in the past, including Sveni.
The eggs were laid on Sunday morning, I believe they are hatching as I type this, the eggs are "wiggling" all over the place while hanging by the connective filament this evening and thier numbers are dwindling quickly
I can't really tell for sure though, I have egg crate on the bottom of the tank and then may be dropping down where I can't see them. (fingers crossed)
Here are a couple shots, not good, but, you get the idea, of the eggs and mom. Quite a turn around from the beating she laid on him about three weeks ago
Please tell me what you think and feel free to share your experiences with pike spawns
