I'm about 3 years into my EBJD breeding project which I started from the begining. I've learned a lot and am willing to share my experience. I've journaled and photo journaled about the whole thing.... so....

Lemme esplain....
No, lemme summarize...

To produce EBJDs...

1) Get an EBJD and raise it up, or buy an adult. Odds are it will be a male cause there are just a lot more males available.

2) Get a regular JD female... cause you probably have a male Blue.

3) Put em in a tank, I use 40 gallons for my breeding tanks. Feed them well/condition them. At this size and age, about 12-14 months old they get Myssis, Brine shrimp, chopped plankton, and maybe a few high quality pellets. Once the female is really sucking up to your studdly male, remove pretty much all other fish from the tank, or they will likely be killed, or be beaten so badly they'll wish they were dead.... they are Dempseys and the BG especially acts like one.
Be sure to provide rocks, clay pots, or pvc for them to spawn on. cause they will... :grinyes:

4) Now that you have eggs, there's nothing for you to do, but press your nose against the glass to keep your fish intertained...
In 3 days the eggs should hatch; in 7 more you will have a batch of 100% BJGDs... Not a single blue one, but every one of them will carry the gene for blue.

5) Raise a fewof these BGJDs to maturity, about 12-14 months, cause unless you get real luck, or have a whole lotta $$$ to spend on BGJDs you aint gonna find any for sale.

6)Repeat steps 3 and 4, but this time replace the regular JD with your precious BGJD. 50% of the resultant fry will be EBJDs the rest will be 2nd generation BGJDs.

And that's all there is to it... ;) besides everything else.

What would the Tank size need to be to successfully get a breeding project going? 55 gallons or more like 90? also Are 2nd Generation BGJD less productive than the 1st GEneveration BGJD? How big of a female JD would be necessary for my 5" EBJD? WHat do you do with all your fry?

This is my first spawn between EBJD male X Regular JD female

Some of the first spawn....100% BGJDs...0% EBJD at 12days old eating live bbs

Four week old fry.At this age I can seperate EBJGs from BGJDs 100% without fail.

1" to 1 1/4" They are actually more blue at this size but the flash washed them out.

Wow! very impressive. I'm curious about what you do with the EBJD's too! I'd like to have a couple of these guys again.

Can you breed the EBJD with a Female EBJD, and a male BGJD somehow?> and how big does thje tank needf to be 55 enough for a few spawnings? or do you think i could try in my 90 gallon communtiy aquarium...? i got a ray, a 5" EBJD male, and some knives, along with some wimpy betta and a gourami...

Yes, I sell them. I will have some in about a month. I'll post on the classifieds then, but I don't want to discuss selling fish here... I would consider it to be off topic... Feel free to PM me in a few weeks.

Well what do u think about me droppin a 4 inch Female JD in with my EBJD just for shats n giggles? if any problems occur i could always jet her back to the store? what are the tricks of sexing the JD's? fin and spots on face?

Sounds like a great idea! Your male EBJD sounds like he's mature, so if you pick a female regular up at your lfs you could have a spawn soon.

It's also worth mentioning here that the breeding color of your EBJD will intensify DRAMATICALLY:WHOA: compared to his regular beautiful blue. Generally, the real "Electric" intensity doesn't reach it's full potencial until they start spawning.

Here are two photos of the same fish taken one week apart...
In the first one the male has never shown interest in the female that has been throwing herself at him for weeks. She IS ready tospawn with her egg depositor draggin on the ground
He is more of a powder blue or turquoise color.
