My ropefish has made me very nervous, its swollen and actively trying to get outta my tank, its dorsal fins are constantly upright, but the most interesting thing of all is the size of its stomach, it looks like it has a few very big lumps, when the light shines on it's stomach, it seems to be see through, now im sure if it was food or poo it would b dark, the thing is though, i haven't fed it in 2 days actually 3 now, worst of all is i dont have a male, i read in a very old book which i happen 2 find at the local fish shop, it says there that internal fertilization takes place, does that mean males or not needed or that the male actually has to penetrate? who knows? i dont know what to do with it, someone said its dorsal fins swell up during spawning, well i can clearly see they have, along with the rest of it.

i dont think anyone has spawned them ever. if you do, its def. guna be a first. i'd check for any signs of illness, just in case. i think they are egg scatterers

There's no sign of any illness, it seems very active i have two females always very close, and the other doesnt have the stomach or any sign of illness either, its unusually active, trying to jump out the tank. im lost and confused as to whats going on, would be great if it was spawning, but then again there's probably no hope without a male, how many animals in the wild can fertilize their own eggs??

i dont think they are a sp. that can change there sex. well whatever happens, make sure she cant escape! the water parameters are ok i assume?

Yes they are, I put her in a seperate tank, cause they're sharing a tank with some fw moray eels. well mayb somone will come along who's had the same thing happen.

''i dont think they are a sp. that can change there sex.''No they can't change sex-Anne

This has never been done before in aquaria. You would need a male to breed them. There is a chance though that your female is producing eggs, and is trying to find a mate, hence the attempting to get out.

lol. there is no freshwater moray. beblondie posted some info on them spawning somewhere not long ago, im sure its findable if you use the search function
