SPAWNING THE CUBAN CICHLID.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Cheers. She is my favourite fish.
99% sure the younguns I just got contain at least two males, I just have to grow them to maturity...
Thanks for that, they don't seem to be very picky about their conditions as far as I'm aware?
There very easy to spawn..Cubans can tolerate a broad range in water parameters with no problems. Males are very gentle on the females once they pair! they form a very strong bond without risk of loosing the female. Not like in most other cichlids were using a divider is essential to eliminate the risk. These are my personal experiences breeding N tetracanthus a fair few times since 1994 with no fatalities..hope this helps fruju..also brother please would you show updates on the progress with tetracanthus! Would love to see how you get on. There a very rewarding fish to own in my opinion...;):)
Also guys are there any of you keeping Cubans past or present.. pics would be very cool to see if you wouldn't mind?

Here is a Cuban I kept years back. Was a good community fish, did not cause problems. Seemed to grow incredibly slowly. Eventually I sold this fish but had it for around a year. I like this species quite a bit.

She's very pretty... how big was she that pic? And did you intend to just keep the one Cuban Gourami swami?
I really had no idea that tetracanthus appealed to so many cichlid keepers nowadays. As I don't see to many being kept and shown off..made me think there popularity had dropped off the scene.. why I didn't show mine sooner..

She was somewhere between 5-6" in this pic. She was about 5" when I bought her and was around 6" when I sold her. I did not intend to breed them so I did not get a male, I bought her on an impulse because she was pretty :) she was in a 125 gallon community with several other CA cichlids. I actually think they have become more common now than 10 years or so ago, I see them fairly often in my LFS.

Would you like to keep them again at some point? and I must you was quite lucky finding a tetracanthus with a temperament as good as she looked.. my luck keeping them through out the years has always ended up me keeping them in there own tank(due to spawning) or in very large tanks with fish who can handle the tetracanthus mood swings and attitude long term.
Cubans were popular over here in the uk in the late 80s! Thing is that way to many people started bad breeding(in breeding) and the shops started trying to sell the deformed off spring in all over the place. So sadly they became less popular to most cichlid keepers here..

That is unfortunate, that the gene pool would become degraded. My fish was from jeff rapps and I was happy with her. She was one of the smallest fish in the tank, so that probably helped keep her aggression down haha. I would be interested in keeping them again, I have always wanted a large pair. Space is limited for me at the moment, but in the future I would definitely keep this species again.

Yes You naild it there! Your a very cool person.if only more cichlid keepers would just take the time to look and see what damage it does inbreeding so many times. Ruins it for all sadly.
And I hope you get lucky again and find a well tempered pair of Cubans..;):)
Ahh now I know why your tetracanthus was so well behaved lol.. Grammodes sitting right on her behind keeping her in check maybe?

Thank you, Best of luck to you as well!
And that is actually an istlanum, green morph. Very similar looking to grammodes, and one of my favorite cichlid species! Yes this mix of fish kept everyone on their toes, but surprisingly I did not have many problems
