what are the initial signs of spawning? i have a male con and a female firemouth(i think). also would tiger barbs eat their eggs, or would they be able to protect them?
with larger cichlids, they will lip lock to test others strength, and also do odd sort of chase dances. excessive digging or what looks like preperation of a nest, or hanging out in flower pots or the like.
For the smaller Cichlids, cleaning of rocks and body shaking around the other fish/rock area is quite common, followed by the digging of pits. Not sure about Convicts as I've never kept them but Firemouth, Blue Acara, Severums etc. all do pretty much the same thing.
everybody just about coverd the signs of spawning but to answer the other question yes they will be able to protect their eggs. thats something they do very well.
they should be able to protect the eggs, i had a pair of cons breed in my 90g with 2 JD's, 1 FM and 1 GT. the eggs were fine and hatched, it was when they became free swimming that they started to disappear.
