lol, just to quickly say, I have ordered online, multiple times. I was just wondering if there would be a cheaper way. Pay $35+ for shipping, plus a $20 fish adds up to be a lot of money when you order online.

From someone who has worked in several aquarium stores, there are two issues that get in the way of "just order me one in"...

First, unless it's something huge/rare/expensive, fish come (from their originating country) in a large quantity, several to hundreds per box. Stores either import these directly, or rely on a wholesaler to bring in the big quanties and then split up the shipment between multiple stores. So for something like Amazonian knifefish, there needs to be enough demand to move them all.

Second, an order isn't feasible for one box, shipments have to be large. These fish might be delicate too, stores don't always want to risk bringing in a pile of risky fish and having 'em croak after they sell a couple.

For instance, our store's Peru supplier has almost 20 species of Amazon knives, but it's not always worth it to "try them out" given that money could be better spent on hardier/better selling fish. Fortunately our big Orthosternarchus came in perfect
