Kristi, check the pectoral fins, dorsal and anal caudal reddish accents. Yours is a Zebra, the other is the so called Red-Top Zebra (Metriaclima Greshakei).

Rotkus, I cannot say what the Aulonocara variant is.

Oh, I thought that the redtops had more red in the top fin like this

I have a 5 metriaclima estherae and when the blue one breeds with the orange they look like a mix of rusty purple or blue with an orange hue as well so I thought mabye it was one with a blue morph and orange morph mix...

??

the "so called " Red Top Zebra aka Maylandia Emmiltos aka Metriaclima pyronotos doesn't have yellow side fines I know I feed one everyday.

Metriaclima Greshakei is the Ice Blue Zebra not the same as a Red Top Zebra and also has NO yellow side fines ..................the fish is Labidochromis sp. Perlmutt

LabidochromisSpecPerlmutt_klein.jpg
similar but I just dont think its a labidochromis sp perlmutt, coloration and face don't look like it to me, I still say it's a metriaclima estherae!

they come in many different colorations

The fish in question most definitely is not a Labidochromis.

I'll give you this, I am not good with common names. I doubt the fish is wild caught (in the hope of a new variant), so my guess is it is a hybrid. Not a pure Perlmutt, for sure: look at the bars, way too many and too thin, and the mouth is Metriaclima like, not Labidochromis.

Sorry Kristi, not an Estherae. :)

they are wild caught. o'opu nakea is from rehab center up the road from M&L. the stripped one is from haleiwa joe's and so is the pinkish one (that used to be VERY dark purple/blue when i first got it >_<) after stressing it it became light like this and remained light. idno why.

oh i wasnt trying to ID the tiger oscar, just my other cichlids :D. they are very confusing fish to ID. as this thread shows. i am looking up every suggestion as i go down the line :grinno:

well if behavior has anything to do with anything, the lighter pink one is followed around by the silvery stripped one.

ADD: if it is a hybrid it could be a possibility because the river i got them is was LITTERED with different kinds of cichlids. i caught my gf a convict and i almost caught a red devil but a damn bigger tilapia rushed up the bait first!!
