Regani are less commonly found in lfs than some of the other species, but are often available to stores, you just need to inquire. They tend to be a bit less aggressive than say the bifasciatum... more like a synspilum in temperment, but of course, this is a blanket statement.
For a fish that will occupy the upper areas of the tank, obviously an arowanna would be a good choice. Peacock bass tend to occupy the upper middle when larger, but are difficult to obtain large and at a reasonable price. They are difficult to get off of live food when small, unless you buy them from someone like Jeff Rapps who claims to condition his bass to pellets.

Whatever I get, I want it to be a baby so I can raise it up. Most of the aggressive inhabitants of my 240 are smallish anyways. I like the idea of pbass, but don't know if I have the room and don't know if they need to be kept in pairs or more. What bout it?

LFS is recommending rainbowfish. Thought they would just get eaten. Would they work?

I may just add more SDs and/or a few more Dats.
