Radio Island, NC Report 10/16

Came down from Raleigh at about 4am to fish the incoming tide at sunrise and man i'm glad i made the trip but i shoulda slept in. Morning was INCREDIBLY slow, had mud minnow out on a carolina rig, bottom rig out with different combos of shrimp, fish bites bloodworms (which i was really unimpressed by), and cut bait, only produced 3 pinfish and a baby puffer... Also was casting gulp shrimp on a popping cork and eventually switched that to a spec rig and caught a couple baby lizardfish around noon. Did see one kid catch 3 flounder, one undersized and two right over 15" on a 4" white super fluke and red jig head, was happy to see him havin fun and catchin some fish. i may have had more success if i hadnt used the popping cork on the gulp who knows next time i wont bother at radio.

Around 4 fished with a guy i had talked to earlier who had been having success with the trout. Put on a 3/8oz red jighead and 3" Gulp Shrimp new penny and waded out to give it a shot. He already had an 18" keeper when I got there and we didnt catch much for the next hour or so, i caught a big lizardfish and some small toadfish and even had a small drum follow it right up to my chest. He left and ended up giving me his Trout which was very generous and after he left i started pulling in the fish. Got my first ever speck about 11"

After that followed it up with an 18" Keeper

after that fishing was pretty consistent, landed 14 total fish, missed just as many with a couple big hits that may have been keepers. weird part of the day i kept having something hit my shrimp and pull me under the rocks, i caught this toad fish and he had one of my other lines down his throat so i figured what the heck, toss him in the cooler to get my other jighead back. got him home cut him open and retrieved 2 of my jigheads along with one from a guy i was fishing with and 2 gulp shrimp, greedy sucker was going for a 4th!

Started running out of gulp and red jigheads so i switched over to a cheaper method with a 3/8th white jig and a gotcha curly tail white jig with green tail, produced another couple smaller fish

This being my first ever trip with trout being the main goal i'm definitely happy with the way things went and definitely hooked on trout catching, new goal is a 20" fish and im sure ill be making it down another couple times before they are gone, definitely investing some waders before that though because i'll tell u what water was pretty cold in shorts and a T shirt

- i was shocked at how hard some of the smaller specks bit on light tackle.

All in all on the day caught 5 pinfish (gf caught a double and was thrilled lol), 4 lizardfish, 3 toadfish, 1 baby puffer and 14 specs, was shocked that no blues bit when i was using a gotcha but oh well, definitely thrilled at how the day went.

thanks bro! u gona make it down here again this year before the bass stop bitin?
