Speeding up Dat growth

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
only the AT and NGT live in somewhat brackish water. Indos, Wide bars, and Thin bars all live in 100% fresh water.

Slightly higher temps can speed metabolism and growth. Just be sure you add an air stone to maintain O2 saturation. You'll have to feed them more, though, which of course means more water changes.

:iagree:

Someone told me that dats tend to grow faster when powerfed live food. I think isolating a dat would help it grow faster as well cause it would have no stress from other fish or competition for food. Daily water changes will help, a constant flow of new water into the tank might give it a sense of expeanding surroundings? XP

I was thinking about this but when i was looking at some photos of them when i first got them about 6-7weeks ago they seem to have grown not much but a little. Fortunately i've got the paitence, to wait.

Yeah, I know of this guy who did a little experiment with 2" juvi oscars. He had one in a 30 with a continuous flow of changing water 24/7. Another in a 30 where he did 50% water changes twice a week. And a third in another 30 where he did 50% water changes once a week. After a period of 3 months of feeding them the same foods, he found that the oscar in the tank with a continuous flow of new water was twice as big as the one in which he changed the water twice a week. Which was, in turn, noticeably larger than the one where he only did one water change per week. So the growth of a fish has a lot to do with water changes/quality. XP

you can always feed feeders. but i realized with my widebars. i found out that they love shrimp more then anythign else i feed it. and they grew about an inch in a month when i started feeding them shrimp. when i fed smelt. half a year and i noticed only 2 inches. so try variety of foods to see which food ur dat likes the most. and dump the food in and let it grub all day.

Water changes! High protien like plankton and shrimp. Market shrimp really fills the entire stomach and is easily digested increasing the growth of your fish. Also feed a variety. Check this out. This is my feedings for my dats

probably bloodworm cubes as all you have to do is pop one or 2 out and thats it.......when small that is ....when a little larger (2 '' or so) switch to frozen krill...ddefinatley a gut filler!!!:)
