I'm planning on buying a DSLR (D5000 or T1i, haven't decided), and I'm also going to get an external flash. Nikon and canon both have a wireless flash controller that mounts on the camera, do these do anything that 3rd party controllers don't do?

The external flashes I'm looking at are the sb600 (nikon) and the 430ex II (canon).

The oem controllers might give you more range and some remote adjustments that the cheaper 3rd party controllers will not. All they will do is make it flash. Some of the nikon cameras has built in commanders so you don't need to buy a controller. Look at the D70, d70s, d80, d90, d200, d300. Nikon flashes tend to be more reasonably priced vs. canon flashes. However a 3rd party controller can be had for about $20 so that aint bad either...
