Sperata aor agression

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'd concur. My experience was limited to a small one too (under a foot). Necro's is still young too - it was ~1' around the last time he posted about it in the thread I linked above. Necro's has been off the radar for a while. Comes out for a week or two and disappears for months.

Out of your 100 tanks :) , which tank is yours in, Michael, and what are its tank mates?

Wow, really slowed down, from 1' to 2' in 2.5 years. Necro's grew from 5" to about a foot in ~6 months IIRC.

Sorry for this long winded reply.

I eventually returned it to the 56kl. I had hoped to be able to add it to the 196kl. When we emptied the 56kl I moved it to a 1814 kl and a 850 kl over the summer /13.
When I added my Wallago attu (63.5 cm) to the 196 kl in October 2012 it was chased by my largest Phractocephalus hemioliopterus (est. 117cm).

I have not seen it since. However it might be alive. I often go a year and as much as 3 without seeing my oldest Hemibagrus wyckii and she is bigger at 70 cm.

So I was afraid that the Sperata Aor might be attacked and put it into the 37,800 kl section of the 56 kl.

The 56,700 litre tank (15,000 gallon) has been sectioned off with a 1cm/1cm plastic mesh to make 3 separate compartments.

The second is 36,700 litres and houses the majority of the fish
The third is 6,000 litres and houses the aba aba

The slow growth rate might have been that the fish had been kept by the pet shop I bought it from, in a 245 litre aquarium with a second aor, multiple Phractocephalus hemioliopterus, and various other fish for a period of 2 years. It really only started to grow again when I got it in 2011.

Thanks a bunch, Michael. Awesome lists. I didn't know you partitioned the 15,000 gal. So, the aor is #2 in section B. Who is #1? #3, 4, 5? Is the hierarchy clear? Is this an overall hierarchy or catfish-only?

M: ... I moved it to a 1814 kl and a 850 kl over the summer /13.
V: kl? or l? Are those your outdoor ponds? If yes, I am not familiar with them.

M: ...Wallago attu... I have not seen it since.
V: I remember this case. Still no sighting?

M: ...I often go a year and as much as 3 without seeing my oldest Hemibagrus wyckii and she is bigger at 70 cm.
V: If I didn't lift my clay half-pots when vacuuming, I'd not see mine two at all :)

M: So I was afraid that the Sperata Aor might be attacked and put it into the 37,800 kl section of the 56 kl.
V: It'd be an interesting experiment to see it in 52,000 gal in terms of interaction with other fish... but I agree, better safe than sorry... for now. Will the aor grow to ~4'? Thee record fish are ~5' in the wild.

OTT: How big is the aba aba now?

The Hemibagrus wyckii is now #1. In the old L shape of the tank it probably was also but did need to injure other fish to prove it as it resided in bog wood and caves in the smaller 229 x 254 cm section. The dorado (now in the 196kl) was the open water apex predator. Now the section of the tank it is in is rectangular only...no non aggression wall.
Next in command are the 3 boulengerochromis microlepis.

SORRY! it should be Litres. I was writing Pi decimal places on a pad alternatively, while composing the post. These are indoor tanks.

I do however have 13 outdoor ponds of which several house tropicals in the summer months. They range from about 100 litres to several hundred thousand litres (largest is 30 metres by 18 metres by 6 metres deep in the deepest end. I also have a dozen or so vats 900 to 1200 litres that I breed or raise fry outdoors in the warm weather

M: ...Wallago attu... I have not seen it since.

No but I used to go long periods without seeing my goonch also.

V: If I didn't lift my clay half-pots when vacuuming, I'd not see mine two at all :) The smaller of the wyckii does come out and swim around a lot.

Mine was stunted by the store before I got it so I doubt it will grow more than 1 metre.

OTT: How big is the aba aba now?
Somewhere between 95cm and 102 cm guestimated
