Spiny Eels don't eat fish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have never seen a spiny eel eat a fish. I had a hungry peacock eel that didn't even try to eat my neon tetras. It is my belief that these fish are given a bad name due to their large size and predatory name.

Way back when, I had an fire eel 18-20" all it was fed was feeder goldfish. A few years ago I had adopted a tire track that was raised to 16" on just rosey red minnows. IME spiney eels will eat live fish.

Poor fire eel. :( Feeders are disgusting. I've seen just how disgusting they can be, and I would never see that as a fit meal and a full diet for any fish.

Who said spiny eels don't eat fish? I know for a fact fire eels will. And for that matter people catch them in the wild on minnows.

I've had numerous 'non-fish-eating' species mac out on live fish. Fire eels, tire-track eel, clown loaches, and african aros are the main species I remember watching eating small fish.

My tire track always ate small fish, my M dayi do now that they can fit the minnows and goldfish down.. the only ones i had that didn't where my fire eels.. but they where fed plenty of nightcrawlers... any fish hungry enough is going to eat anything small enough to fit into its mouth.. and just like we develop tastes for certain foods ime fish will as well.. even species like the "vegetarian" pacu will eat other fish if its starveing, or has developed a taste for meat...my peacock eels regularly ate the guppy fry in the tank, and any male small enough to fit.
