Spirulina based foods causing black spots?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If it was a disease wouldn't all the other fish that have been in the tank get it? It is the only fish I own that has it and has grown nearly 15cm in 6 months and has had it since it was a fry, doesn't seem like a sick fish to me.

Do you use carbon in your set up. I just read on another forum that they are looking into carbon causing some black spotting on loaches, wonder if the same could be for other fish. They say to rinse the carbon well. Yet another possibility?

I use spirulina as a staple for young fish. I also use it to power feed my fry. Never have any issues and the fish grow like crazy.

If it's something that's just recently appeared there's another possibility imo. I'm not a disease expert to diagnose exactly what it was, but a couple of times over the years I've had a fish develop anomalous small black spots that were easily cured with a good water change, mild salt dose to the tank, and/or mild dose of something like melafix and/or pimafix, and/or bucket baths of methylene blue. If it's what I've seen I'd say water change (along with filter maintenance, if needed) and mild salt dose would normally take care of it and typically the other stuff would just speed it up or add some insurance.

Wouldn't attempt to diagnose from the photos if it's just a pigment anomaly, the same thing as what I'm talking about, or something else, but if it's what I've seen it's an easy cure and not serious.

Also, you can't always go by the thought that a disease would affect your other fish, since some are infectious, some not. And you're not always dealing with a disease in the full sense. Sometimes you just get the random parasite or odd scale injury or scuff that attracts some fungus or whatever, but turns out to be minor and temporary or easily cured.

Talking to RD. can also give you the disease!

How would you know, you don't call or send flowers anymore.

I don't use carbon in my filter, I also use aquasonic tropical water conditioner that has methylene blue in it and I also add small amounts of salt when I do water changes. I suspect the tropical conditioner only has small amounts but have recently bought some methylene blue but am unsure of the amount I should dose as I don't want to double up on it.
