I found my ray with a stinger coming up through his head. I am thinking like biggfish's ray that he was sifting the sand and ate the stinger. I do not have any experience sedating fish and I am fairly certain that because of his size 16" and he is very healthy that he should heal quickly. I have monitored the wound for 2 days and it seems like the barb is slowly working its way through 1/8" per day. I have no idea how long it is and would not want to have any break off and heal inside my ray. I am imaginging that sedating the ray may cause more trauma than a quick out into a towel and removal of the barb with pliers.

Is it through his eye? You might not want to go pulling out his eye.

It is through his eyesocket. It did not penetrate the actual eyeball, that I can tell. I am sure that he could survive with 1 eye, but I would bet that he wouldn't make it too long with a stinger through his brain.:jaw:

are there any vets in the area that specialize in fish? they might help sedating him for the procedure

question...

(Not a ray owner so please go lightly)

was this ingested, or possibly ran over...? like, in his mouth an out the eye socket or ran over, hooked, then up through ..?

There is no mark on his underside that I can tell. I would have to guess that it was ingested orally. My rays frequently sift the sand through their mouth.

Okay, don't laugh, I never kept rays and probably never will. But why is there a stinger just laying around? I don't understand how this happens and would like to be educated.

They shed their stingers from time to time and it can be difficult to locate the old one in a big tank with sand, etc.
