Well that could work. Doesn't really matter what sponge you use for a DIY sponge filter. Try automotive sponges for cars. Buy two of them ( each are about 2.5" thick 8"+long) and stack them put you intake through them with two slots where both sponges are and walla you have a sponge filter. Use very porous sponges though that are very soft and mushy when they come out of the package. When you use that power head put some gaskets around the intake of the Power head and force it into the tube so you get a nice perfect seal. You could even use a aquarium pump which I think would be more reliable than the power head. Plus you can add additional DIY filtration with it like a PVC biological tube filter.
