Sponge filter material?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hello; I got some white open cell foam at Wal-Mart a year or so ago. It was in the craft/sewing section and is commonly used for chair cushion padding. I cut a couple of shapes out and center holes. I had some very old sponge filter bases from many years ago and used one. i ahve had this in a QT for around a year now and it has worked out well. I should have the package around if anyone is interested.
Im interested in it talk to me ..

Hello; The stuff from Wal-Mart is called POLY-FIL TRUE-FOAM BIO-BASED FOAM PAD 15in x 17in x 1in. I got two pads in the packag. I do not recall the cost but think it was under $10. I have used a few parts and still have a complete pad.
I cut the pads for my sponge filter to make two sections that stack onto one bubbler base. This way I hope to have a quickly removable pad loaded with beneficial bacteria should the need arise. I will pull them for a cleaning in a day or two and give a report on their condition after a year plus. I have some fish ready to be removed from QT.

Thanks im getting some where now thanks a million!

Hello; I transfered the fish from QT to their home tank. I pulled the sponge filter and gave it a few good squeezes in a bucket of old tank water. The foam sponge material was still in good shape. It was intact and not structurally weak. I have had some fish in the QT for several weeks at a time with no apparent ill effects. I have one long term resident of several months who is doing well. My take on this test thus far is that this foam material works well as sponge filter material.
I plan to try to fit the material in one of my HOB filters. It may be too dense to flow well enough but is worth a try.

Do you mind posting some pics of how you have it set up exactly how you put it all together? thanks

Hello; There probably are simple ways to post pictures but I do not have those available.
I did not have to make the hard part of the sponge filter. I have a few sponge filters from several decades ago. The sponges had gone over time. I just cut a hole in the new pad material to slip over the old base.
Perhaps another member can tell us how to construct a homemade base.

Ok thanks for the help though and yea i did some deep digging and found you can use a ceramic /slate tile to glue things down im assuming the pvc pipe not the filter material but i could be wrong...
