Sponge Filter Misunderstanding

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Give it a couple of days...My hydros take at least that long to 'settle' in....

I have to rinse it under warm water every week? Doesnt that kill all the bacteria?

Not warm water... used tank water...and no you don't HAVE to rince it at all. I don't bother washing ours at all. I just replace them when they start to decompose. This is on tanks with other filtration as well...I DO rince the ones in the fry/breeder tanks once a month or so.

Sponge filters are great for biofiltration, but less useful in mech filtration. You need an additional filter that will provide mech filtration.

Mechanical filtration should be the least of your worries if you're trying to raise fry. Sponges are primarily useful for a lot of biofiltration without the risk of small fish or anything getting injured with current or by being sucked into intake tubes.

You can get debris off the bottom manually with a siphon when necessary.

If you're not going to raise fry then you just use power filters for mechanical filtration along with it.

I have a rena filstar xp2 on the 55 as well.. so DOUBLE FILTRATION!!

oo.. tank water ehh? but i think i would want to wash it off so that all that junk on the sponge wont come off into the tank..

Tank WATER....not IN the tank.....lol

But sponge filters... isnt bio filtration all i really need? chem filtration is for chemicals and bad smelling tanks and i forgot what mech filtration is

well, bio-filtration is the bacteria turning ammo and 'trite into 'trates. chemicals filtration is carbon, which removes any kind of chems in the tank, not just meds, tannins, or 'smells'. mechanical filtration is the actual physical part which catches and traps debris like fish poop, plant bits, and uneaten food so its not blowing all over the tank. usually all of those combine in a regular filter.

Wait about 2 weeks and squeeze out your sponge filter in your tanks wc waste water and then u will see how much poo it has collected and how good it really works.
