What do you have it hooked up to.....Sponge filters really don't have alot of suction unless they are hooked up to a powerhead, if not, they are mainly biological filters, not really to much mechanical purpose. If a sponge is you only filter, water changes will be your best mechanical filtration, LOL, vacuum......They do have a small amount of suction and will trap particles floating around them and eventually, they can clear water
My pair of Discus unexpectedly started spawning and I want to move them to an empty tank. I want to set up a sponge filter but how long do they need to seed and how is the best way? Like BIGMONSTER, I'm not too familiar with sponge filters.
whatever tank you have now, throw a sponge in it. even if it's one of the smaller cylinder types. make sure it's been in their a while if you decide to transfer to a new tank.
if it hasn't been a few months and you need some filtration, your best bet would be to do regular water changes, in 50% intervals. be sure temp matches up withing 1 degree!!!! sponges are amazing, used with powerheads or external pumps. i love mine!
sponge filters make a great secondary filter to any tank especialy anything small. i always like to throw them in my 55's and are good for "dead spots" like that back corner anyways they dont have great suction and shouldnt be anything but a bio filter discus do well from the still water they provide and discus owners do huge water changes daily
