I was going to make a sponge filter for my 15 gallon tank since my rosy barbs are breeding and I think I have fry on the way. But anyway after searching around I couldnt find a piece of foam to use. So this is what I did. Tell me what you think.

I have an aquaclear 20 in my tank. I turned the water flow all the way down and wrapped sterile gauss pads around the intake a few times and used a rubberband to hold it in place. It was wrapped around about 6 times or so. Water is still flowing pretty good. Will this work if there are fry in the tank?

Sure. As long as you're still getting flow it should be just fine.

What I usually do is go get an aquaclear sponge and cut it to go over the HOB intake.

dang i should of thought of that. Could of just taken the sponge out of the filter and used it. it would in theory still do the same function on the tube as it would in the filter. also leave more room for other filter media as well. since this is a breeder tank then it could be permanent.

great idea. if this falls through I will have to do it that way.

That's what I did and didn't lose any fry to the filter. I also made a quick sponge filter by taking a large filter sponge, cutting into it, placing an air hose into the cut and weighting it down. Worked quite well for fry until I could get out and get a real one.

I've heard other people recommend using a piece of nylon stocking to strain filter intake...
