Air is pumped down in the tube and when it comes back up it pulls water through the sponge. They are great biological filters.

can also be used with a powerhead, heck i've attached it to my hob filter intakes

They are very underrated

Extremely good to have on hand, especially if you breed fish. This filter when used with an air pump avoides the chance of sucking up fry through an impeller.

thats what i used them for.

They're worth twice their weight in gold.

Also an inexpensive way to complete your filtration if ya happened to buy somethin crappy like whisper. I use one and a cheap HOB in my quarantine tank, with two extra sponges in my 75's wet/dry incase I need to medicate/sterilize the quarantine tank.

I'm setting up a 110 that will have nothing but sponges as filtration! lol

sponges are great cheapest easiest and most eficient biofilter.Fry treat it like a buffet grazing on the surface.
