I see on this link below there only around 10 bucks, but is that all you need? isnt there like some kinda pump you need to run it? or does it come with everything you need?

thanks

Mmm, As the description states to be used with a pump or power head...

Would need more than just biological filtration in the tank

What is a "classic Filter"? I use every kind of filter on my various tanks. The important thing is water quality. If you filter fails to keep your water quailty up it it useless.

That said, I use a sponge in my quarantine tanks and in my food breeding tanks(snails, shrimp). I consider them like a mini-under gravel filter that is mobile.

Instructions:
Rinse and squeeze the sponge under water and slip the sponge on the strainer. Directions for use with a airstone: Connect airstone to the bottom of the bull's eye, then connect bull's eye to the top of the strainer. A pump, airline tubing, and airstone are needed.
Directions for use with a power head: Attach the power head to the lift tube.
Maintenance:
Rinse the sponge with cool, running water weekly. Do not use hot or cold water as this will destroy the bacteria which colonize the sponge. Do not use soap or detergent when rinsing the sponge.

I use sponge filters in all of my fry-raising tanks and several of my breeding tanks. They are much less expensive to run if you've got a large fish room. I run bare tanks for those with sponge filters, so mechanical filtration isn't really a necessity. Mulm is removed during water changes.

i mean like BIO and like the ones that pour water and clean through carbon. thats what i consider a classic filter.

I don't run carbon in ANY of my filters (canister or HOB), so not having it in tanks with sponge filters isn't a concern for me.
