Sponge Filters?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I think sponge filters work great if you're rasing fry, but it shouldn't be your main filter. I'd use it as a secondary filter.

Alright thanks

Ive found with a good air supply sponge filters are as good or better thann a hob or canister. If you clean them regularly.

Have you heard of TOP FIN?

They're inexpensive and pretty low quality. If you're looking for good sponge filters, you really can't go wrong with the Lustar Hydros. They're excellent quality, and you can buy replacement sponges while keeping the nice heavy bases.

personally I use the lowly corner filters, once the mainstay of the hobby theyre decent up to about 55gallons imo and the advantage over the sponge filters is that you can pack them with whatever you want (floss, carbon, ceramics) and they dont take up as much space as one of those large sponge contraptions, check them out, you pick them up for for around 5 bucks and you buy your media in bulk so its cheap

Instructions:
Rinse and squeeze the sponge under water and slip the sponge on the strainer. Directions for use with a airstone: Connect airstone to the bottom of the bull's eye, then connect bull's eye to the top of the strainer. A pump, airline tubing, and airstone are needed.
Directions for use with a power head: Attach the power head to the lift tube.
Maintenance:
Rinse the sponge with cool, running water weekly. Do not use hot or cold water as this will destroy the bacteria which colonize the sponge. Do not use soap or detergent when rinsing the sponge.

ACK! NEVER EVER rinse the sponge filter with tap water unless you are cleaning it and starting all new. The chlorine will kll the bacteria in the sponge and then you place it back in the tank only to cause more problems.

Rinse in old tank water form a W/C by squeezing.
