So I made a deal with the GF, if I can figure out a way to reduce the electric bill, I can get another big tank, which I REALLY need. I'm wanting to setup a Polleni and Damba and Paretroplus nourisatti.

I currently have two 265's and two 210's, one 75 and one 35.

Each tank besides the 35 and 75 run two canister filters each, so 8 filters total.

I read the sticky about sponge filters and from what I got from it, seems to be no different than a canister filter, only downside is the sponge in the tank which can be hidden. It's a pain to drag out all the filters when I need to clean them. I have a schedule on when I clean each filter. With a sponge it would be easy to clean and the water changes and siphoning will remain the same, which is fine.

Biggest tank I've seen so far is a 125 with sponges on here and several LFS's use them on their 125s. I was looking at running about 5-6 per 265 and 4-5 on the 210s with my current stock load.

Has anyone here had any success with running sponges on a large tank?

I sure do miss the 500 with the Ultima setup, cleaning it was easy and fast.

Just guess. Watch ammonia levels to tell you if you need more. If it goes up, add more seeded sponges until your ammonia test tells you you have enough in the new 265.

I have no idea how many you'll need, but I'd say buy twice as many as your LFS uses on their 125's. Seed them all in your existing tanks, add them to the new tank as you need them. They're really cheap.

Put the air pump above the water level so you just KNOW there's no way it could ever siphon out your tank.

Of course, your fish will probably tear 'em up. :)

No idea. The only sponge filter I've ever run is the ONE I have currently in my sump. I just keep it in there for when I need to throw up the 20 gallon hospital tank in a hurry to treat with meds.

Those are fancy, though. Mine is the old style that uses an air pump. I bet I could rig mine like that, though. In fact, I might do that because I'm tired of hearing the bubbling in the other room.

I've been looking most of the day for any type of sponge filter in large tanks but cant find any, I see sponges rated for 125 gallons but thats it. No show tanks with sponge filters, etc. I found some by swiss tropicals that are 16" tall, biggest so far.
