Spotted bullhead

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yeah, blacks can be that kind of color, too - that's why I was kind of questioning it actually being a spotted bullhead (A. serracanthus). Unless you actually went out and caught it in S. GA or FL, then spotted bullhead is unlikely. Regardless, it's a good-looking fish.

Sweet little bullhead!

It is and it finally settled in and started eating today. Chubby little spotted cat sleeping in the plants lol

awesome fish!

Right?! First one I've ever seen here in SoCal.

Egon has my old brown bullhead. He topped out at about 8-9 inches I believe. Cool calm cat to own.

Oh cool man! 8-9" would be a great size. Just need to keep the tank mates larger than him.

Love catfish,great cleaners too

True.

The planet catfish link does absolutely nothing to clear up up an ID. Does your fish have dark margins around its fins? This is a character that can help distinguish between the two much better than just the coloration.
Also, a better pic of the dorsal fin would be great.
Not doubting you or trying to be an ass, but those two are mis-id'd a lot. It looks like a southern brown bullhead though which are much more mottled in appearance than the their nothern subspecies. A true spotted will have a mostly or all black body with smaller white spots, dark margins around the fins, and a notable dark blotch or dark coloration at the base of the dorsal fin.

Whether its a true spotted Bullhead (which would be beyond cool), or a southern sub sp. of brown Bullhead, its a very good looking catfish to own.

I had no idea these cats were hard to id. I'll get some better pics to share and the people more familiar with natives can make the call.

I don't really care if its true spotted or not I just like the way it looks, and I don't often keep catfish.

Yeah, I had a brown that looked just like his and I should've never gotten rid of him. Awesome fish. Also had a snail bullhead which was pretty cool.

great looking fish
