You will be fine if the Gar is a Spotted and not a Gator. Have read and heard of record Alligator Gar 8' or larger.

ok so for filters will a 50gallon stock tank full of lava rock rubble with pothos planted in it and sponge pads under the input

I would checkout pond filters or diy sump or canister filters if indoors.
