Spotted gar+polypterus senegalus=?

I have a 12" Florida gar in with a 6" ornate. He doesn't pay any attention to him. One thing I have heard though (and I fear this is good advice), Keep your gar well fed. Not neccissarily over fed, just don't let it get hungry. My first reaction, though, is that your polypterus won't be the fish on the menu he'd choose, unless thats the only fish on the menu.

keep a 12-13" Spotted Gar in with P. senagalus, delhezi & palmas buetti all around 6-7" mark with no problems at all. check the picture-they're best of mates.

i agree. i have a 13" florida gar in with a 6" mosaic gar and the first night he acted like he was going to eat him so i put a few shinners in and he ate them instead. ever since then ive kept him fed well and their has been no sign of the florida trying to eat or hurt the mosaic at all. but i still get excited every day i come home and see the mosaic is still there! lol!

One thing I have noticed about my Gars is this.
I keep my tank stocked at all times with feeders for them, there occassions that I will starve them for short periods of times. I see that when there is a constant food source they will usually eat a few small fish here and there, but the longer they go without food the larger the pray they are willing to eat.
My advice, just keep the Gars feed enough not to eat the fish you would like to keep alive in the tank. When they are full they snack, when they are hungrey they FEED!

thats exactly what ive noticed w/ my gar. if hes really hungry he will take down very large fish. but if well fed then he will just snack on some smaller fish and take a larger one here and there.

If it can fit it into its mouth, and he gets hungary, chances are he'll have a good go at eating the senegal

my gar ate my 8" senegal... he was 14" but not a spotted gar, it was my shortnose gar. he's just mean as heck tho. my spotted gars are angels. dont harm anything. just bite eachother every now n then when going for pellets lol

I had a 6 or 7 inch wolffish that got whacked by my 14" alligator gar. I think adult gar (of any type) are more prone to eating <7" fish, as long as they can fit them.
