is an african arowana a suitable one? if not, what would be? other tankmates would be a clown knife and a tigrinus cat. tank will be 8x3x2 ft, 360 gallons, if they get too long, they can be relocated to an indoor pond. thanks

i had to take in a 12 inch after my friend had tank issues and it was in my oscars 55 gallon tank. at the time my oscar was about 4 inches now its about 10 and they get along great.

An african aro should be fine with the gar. Several of us (including myself) have good luck with Polypterids, several arowana species, and other gar as tankmates. I would not advise housing cichlids and other aggressive fish species with gar. That usually ends up bad for the gar.

What's the consensus on cats and gars? I know I've seen that called a bad combo around here but it seems like it would depend on the cat...you'd think medium cats like big synodontis, sun cats, etc would work, but I definitely think the monster cats that are popular aound MFK (redtails, TSN, etc) would be a bad choice.

Ive heard that Syno's can be bad slime/scale suckers (similar to what plecos can do). I think a lima shovenose would be fine or something like a bullhead would be ok. It all depends on the gar and the catfish being housed together. Like everything...there is no clear answer.

a tig isnt a very active cat so i dont think there will be a problem there, and ive seen them housed together. but i was just asking cuz ive heard of gar not liking very active tankmates that it disturbs them, but apparently tankmates quickly get used to an african arowana's swimming activities.

One of the main things you have to watch with big catfish, is that they will try to eat things their own size...sometimes even larger.

a tig only gets to about 2 feet, nothing like the rtc, they dont move that much as to where a rtc is very active. i could replace with LSN? but an LSN is only a few inches short of a tig at adult size, although they are alot less expensive

Wow I thought the tigs got big like TSN and TSNxRTC.

As for the active tankmates they do seem to annoy my Florida gar.

every gar ive owned has had no problem with active tankmates.
only thing to look out for is aggressive tankmates and tankmates that could eat them.
i have 5 gars with an african aro and CK right now...
