Ive read on alot of sites that the temperature range is 15-22 celcius, however ive seen that on temperature records places where spotted gars are native to the temperature drops below 0 in winter. I want to know this as i need to know how long each year i could keep one in the pond. SO what temperatures will they actually tollerate.

Below 0 c?? this is way too low
If it grew up in these conditions it would be fine but if raised in aquaria dont even think in my opinion

thats what i was thinking but if it went into a pond during summer when temp was above 20 deg c then it had summer to gain weight before the gradual change through to winter when it would probably not even reach 0 and stay more between 5-10 it could work. As in some of the native habitats it gets below 0 for extended periods

those native habitats are much larger and have refuges for fishes under such conditions. if you don't have a big pond then don't keep a spotted gar unless you can keep it indoors. putting the fish into those temperature conditions will just kill it. your best bet is to just bring the fish indoors for the winter--

Also this fish is more than likely a Florda Gar...I do believe they would have a lower tolerance to cold than that of a Spotted Gar. Either way it doesn't sound like a great idea unless it's a huge pond or you heat it to some degree.

I think i'll give it a miss, the pond is 8000g so probably not big enough unless i put a small pond in the garage or something so it's warmer

thanks for the help anyway guys
