My little spotted gar is doing awesome! He's downing rosie's and platies like a champ. Hasn't taken fd krill, pellets, or even shrimp yet :irked:. But he's still young, so I'll give him some time.

I'm basically keeping feeders in the tank so that he can eat whenever he wants. He's fat 100% of the time :). He's so unlike the small shortnose gars I got from Journeykc, he's so chill in comparison. The shortnose are still pretty skittish, but he doesn't seem bothered by me looking in the tank or poking around in it at all. I even touched his back while he was hovering just beneath the surface, and all he did was slowly move away.

Here's some pics! These were right after I added new feeders to the tank, so he's pretty pudgy from feeding:

get it off live, mines about 5 inches and i hand feed it fd krill and shrimp. nice though.

@5" it should still be on live food eating as much as he wants, in other words the tank constantly full of live feeders preferably something other than goldfish. @ about 12" is when you should stop with the live food. Your at an advantage now because he's already eating prepared food.

I trained my shortnose gars over to prepared foods at around 9-10". All my gars still get live occasionally though. I'm keeping the spotted on rosy red minnows and platies, and I'm hoping to avoid giving him comets if I can.

Mine likes the frozen fish from the LFS most.
I bought that stuff for my Oscar but he only wants worms...
Last week after two fish he took my thumb above the water instead of the third fish, and drew blood.
Allways hungry...
Nice markings on your Spotted, very cool.
Keep us updated on the growth.

Mine did the same thing about 2 weeks ago, except I was concentrating on feeding a different gar, so I didn't realize it had come up to check out my finger. Startled me, but I don't think it drew any blood (don't remember seeing any).

I'll be sure to post pics as he/she progresses.
