How do you go about weaning off live food? Mine is only about 7" right now

All I did was toss some freeze dried krill in there. Several of the gars went right for it, some didn't. I did the same with market shrimp and tilapia fillet with the same results. Sometimes you need to use tongs to wiggle the shrimp/tilapia/krill in their faces to stimulate the striking instinct. Some of them take to it quick and easy, some are stubborn and don't want to eat. I never let them go more than 3 days without having something to eat, even if it meant tossing in feeders. It took about a month, but now every one of my gar take market shrimp, tilapia, krill, oyster, silversides, and a few take pellets. Those are much slower going, since they're so different from the rest of the foods. But once you get them started, they learn to associate you with food, and they learn that whatever your dropping in the tank is likely food, and will eventually eat it happily.

spotted looks great Conner! glad to see some updates! looks like he's right on par with his siblings at this point (the larger ones anyway). that fish has a great pattern, hopefully it retains the speckled belly (we have seen this in adults where some have it and some don't). go ahead and experiment with non-live if you want, but you're definitely on the right track keeping him well fed on rosies and platies for now--

:D Good to know I'm on the right track. I really hope he retains that speckled belly pattern as well, its really wild looking. I think he is by far the calmest gar I have. The florida's get all worked up when I walk up to the tank, looking for food, the shortnose get worked up thinking either I'll feed them or attack them. This guys just kind of like, "dude, what's up?".

I'll try to get a measurement on him once I've had him a few more weeks so you can compare with his siblings.

If he's well fed, just starve him for 2 or 3 days and offer the food you want him to take.
My Florida switched real easy and still eats out of my hand.
Takes worms and sometimes pallets and even algaewafers...

comets are how i power fed my first gar!
and nice! i wonder if solomon has any more..... hmmmm
