i'm not sure if they get that big in captivity.. mines in only about 17" tip to tip and it been with me for 3 years now.. eat's pretty good too so i don't think that its underfed.. they probably stay below 2ft in the captivity..

as long as the fish can swallow the food item with minimal difficulty you should be ok. gars are generally gape-limited, so as long as they can get the food down, they should be fine. what kind of food are you feeding the fish?--

just got myself 2 x 6" spotted gar. It suppose to be a longnose gar but i went to the owner's place it turn out to be a spotted well i got it 2 for SGD$10 good deal yeah. Not forgetting its pellet trained too. but they started eating my feeders once i put them in my tank
