Spotted Silver dollars

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Apologies for rekindling the link, but the importer's brought these in and I'm wondering:
a) will they mix with my current school of "regular" SDs (5)? School together?
b) size? A little smaller than the regulars?
No idea what the actual sp. is, just "Spotted Silver Dollar" on the order notice.

Silvers will mix with each other regardless of species in my experience. They will get about 6 inches of I’m correct, so about the same as most silver dollars.

Agree with Deadeye. They will form multispecies groups if conditions are good (tank size, water quality).
I have 3 species in my SD tank - M. lippincotianus, M. maculatus & M. altidorsalis. They all school (or hang out) together.

There are several (more than two) species of "(Metynnis)spotted silver dollars" (for instance, M. cuiaba, M. melanogrammus & M. mola can all be spotted. These almost never enter the hobby, but perhaps occassionally they do as contaminants of other wild dollars).
The most common "spotted silver dollars" in the hobby (and at stores/dealers) are indeed M. lippincotianus and M. maculatus.

Photos below, M. lippincotianus (male), M. maculatus (Male), M. altidorsalis (male). Note that M. altidorsalis is not a "spotted silver dollar", although of course it does have dark splotches and even a few spots.
