Spring cleaning of the pond

After the old man winter's gone, it's time for me to do some Spring cleaning of the pond. The cleaning turned out to be pretty easy for me. Firstly I scooped up the fishies and relocated them into 4 big containers. I hooked up a garden hole into the Savio pump. After the pond was pumped out of water, I removed all debris, scrubbed and pressure-cleaned the liners spotless. I refilled & dechlorinated the water. I rescooped up the fishies & returned them into their spotless home. That's it. It's done! What about you guys? Have you done your Spring pond cleaning yet? Thanks goodness for the multi-adaptors that fit the Savio pump and a garden hose.

The 100-foot-garden-hose came in handy. It carried the water from the pond way out to a storm drain.

You drained the whole thing? Im no expert in ponds at all but doesnt that destroy all the Beneficial bacteria? Please correct me if im wrong, i plan on setting up a pond so the info would be helpful.

I just did mine on Thursday. But I leave about 50% of the water in the pond since doing such a major water change damages the existing balance you already have.

I'm with Hank...

I like to leave some water in the pond. I have also used a 300 gal. stock tank to keep some of the water and house the fish if the pond has realllllly bad algae and needs the rocks and liner cleaned. Even then I do a good job, but not great job as to not create a "sterile" pond that has no BB or microorganizms left behind.

I have never, in 5 seasons, done a 100% clean-out. I do a large water change in fall and again in spring once water temps. are around 50 consistantly. If good maintenace practices are continued until the pond freezes (netting out organic matter) the spring start up and clean-ups are usually minimal and less nusiance algae.
