It's suppose to get close to 80F today so I thought I'd check on my box turtles and found that 2 of them were already awake from hibernation. It's always a relief to see that they made it through the winter. This one was a particularly cold one.

thats great. you burried them or what?

No, they buried themselves since I keep them outdoors all year long. That's how they hibernate in the winter and I haven't seen them since the end of October.

sweet!! Now get up a cover so those damn squirrels cant get in there and destroy the eggs!!

real cool having an outdoor pet that you really dont have to maintain at all

About 5 months of the year I don't really have to do anything so that's nice. The rest of the year I do have to weed the pen and give them fresh water to soak in every day. They also get fed 2-3 times a week.

The squirrels are getting really bad around here. I'm going to see what I can do to keep them out of the pen.

Amazing pictures and animals.

How long did it take for it to completely emerge and do they start feeding right away?

It's been in he high 50's the last couple days so I'm sure that's when they were waking and slowly making their way to the surface. They bury down about 6-10" inches into the soil and then I add about a foot of leaves on top of them for extra insulation. I just removed most of the leaves so the soil can warm up quicker in the sun. If the temperatures stay warm they can start eating in a few days. If it gets cold again they could bury themselves and sleep for a few more days/weeks.

you know what to do...... :D

cover it. simple tilt top should work i would think.

shoot:) pick up some weak .22 and drop them. they sell stuff that is very very weak or a varmit shot shell out of the .22 should work.

erm i mean, catch them alive and transport them away *looks around nervously* yeah that it!! :D

There's a house about 30 yards directly behind the pen so no .22 shots. However, I do have a pellet gun that I know is able to kill squirrels. :D

The problem is I think a squirrel could squeeze between the wire fencing I used on the enclosure and I can't change it. I'm just going to have to look for possible nesting spots, see if eggs are there and then place wire over them.

yeah thats prolly your best bet. But they have a .22 pest control shot that has a plastic tip and is full of tiny and i mean tiny bbs. Thats what i use.

That or it sounds like someones got to work on there aiming skills:ROFL:
