You can't really tell the exact age based on size and if cared properly datnoids live for a very long time.
If turning a profit is what drives you in this hobby than good luck to you. The black ray prices seems to drop by the day and I'm pretty sure that neither food or electricity is getting cheaper.

When someone lacks confidence when it comes to keeping fish alive it's a good sign that they have no business owning that fish in the first place. And a fish is not an "investment" unless you are planning to resale it.

you must of been offended with my post but just to tell you its not lack of confidence I'm just saying that anything can happen to it OUTSIDE of your control and what I meant by investment is just the process of purchasing it to clear things up if you want to get all "technical" about it, but if you like dropping 2k per fish then by all means do it I just feel I can do something better with that much money and get something I will long enjoy after the fish is dead due to old age.

Don't worry, it takes alot more to offend me LOL......The price is a relative thing and you are the only person that can decide if spending that money is worth to you or not. For me, buying my ST was the best thing I ever did hobby wise. It's a fantastic fish to own and so much different from all the other datnoids in so many ways. It's by far the fish I enjoy watching the most and that has nothing to do with the price tag.

BUMP for some great dats.

thats very true but unlike non-living collectors item these wonderful specimens are prone to death sadly enough and so you never know how long you can actually enjoy it before it ends up in the trash the next day, I guess you could freeze it and then keep it as a memo =D lol but to me the investment just isn't worth it but I'm not trying to derail this thread or anything, they are worth every penny that they sell for, I apparently just don't have enough pennies to buy them without regret if anything were to happen to it.

I agree with this statement. Collectors items like old car is something you could fix, swap engine, and redo the bodywork to keep its value and looking nice. But if a $1,000 fish that is unknown age and how long its going to live after you purchase it is a waste of hard earns money. You have to put value into fish keeping because its what count. If it doesn't count than why would you pay that much money for a fish without any money in return. Like digidat said collectors item that die on you without a return is not very smart.

I remember hearing someday saying that digidat is lack in confidence in keeping fish. Could anyone in the fish keeping hobby said in full confidence that they have never had a fish died on them before?
