Any pics? If you wanted to get the bugs/hair out you could use a green pad on the surfaces and hand rub some wax on it. I believe Minwax still makes a wax, I have used it on many times on woodwork jobs for clients. Just a thought. Or you could sand it down tack cloth it, strain the poly and give it another coat.
