I will have to show you pics of my stand that I built out of laminated oak and it cost me about $250 to make and I stained and put 4 coats of varathane on. It came out really nice. Everything is looking good with your stand!

First coat looks good. I've stained a few small projects. Its not too hard once you get the hang of it. Luckily my dad has a nice paint sprayer so he can just spray the stain on larger things. He paints for a living.

Nice. I've never heard of that. My dad usually stains things and then polyurethanes them with high gloss poly and it makes it shiny.
