Stand design for 72"x18"x20" tank. Will it work?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Looks very sturdy. As far as vertical support, you have lots... infact, you could loose a couple and still be okay (it's going to weigh a lot). I'm worried about your shear support though... best to have some plywood cladding or some diagonals to keep the stand square under stress.

Cheers for the input. I'm not too concerned with how much it weighs since I'll only be lifting it into place once. I figure that if it ever gets water damaged or anything, I'd rather have it overbuilt.

I took your advice about the diagonals. How does this look? Please excuse the disco colours - I was working out how much wood I needed to buy, and it made it easier to colour code the different lengths.

looks good very sturdy. but if it were me I'd make it s 72x24 foot print. the design you have should easily be able to hold more weight than a 120g so if you make it a little bigger and add a few more supports you could get a 180 (6x2x2)-225(6x2x2.5) later and use the same stand.

He has a glass tank already.

(I think)

yeah but say he runs it for a while and decides he wants to upgrade, wouldn't it be nice to just look for a tank rather than having to build a stand again for his next upgrade? that's why my stand is a 6x2 footprint for my 6x1.5 foot print tank.

yes, it would be nice =)

Thanks for your ideas guys.

I've already got the tank, well, I've already paid for it and I'm just waiting for it to be delivered to my LFS. The plan is to use this as a growout tank while I build a 360G (8'x3'x2') plywood monster :)

Hey guys, I've made some small changes to my design but it's very similar to the sketches above. Here are some pictures of the final product:
