we are thinking about just using brackets on the inside. does anyone think that would be enough for it?? have to wait till the wood drys fully so we have time to change our minds. i think its a little sketchy but my friend thinks it should be fine.

Seriously look into a Kreg. I built my stand with it, and I gotta say it is very solid and the pocket hole it the only way I screwed it together. That and Industrial liquid nails and you got it made.
Go with the 2 1/2" screws. I am a true believer in the Pocket hole jig not. With the 4x4 I would do 2 screws on each face. Kreg are their own screws, Pricy but very worth it.
