Excellent! Thank you.

Random question - how big is your sump? I'm hoping my 80g will be sufficient.

An 80g tank would be a sufficient sump. My sump has a volume of about 34g total, it is rated for just a 300g tank. I do also have a couple xp3s on the tank. In the future I'll be switching to a 150g sump in the basement that will also filter a couple other tanks on the opposite side of the room.

an 80 gal seems a little small IMO

i have a 180 gal sump on my 450 and its about perfect

I'm sure the extra water volume is nice, but there is no way you would need that much media to properly filter the tank.

your right but if the power goes out, water is going all over the floor.

depends on what hes stocking the tank with also....

Not if overflows are set up properly. My sump is 30"x14"x14" and does not overflow with the power off.

I've had a couple of people say the 80g would be fine, but then I've also heard about overflows when the power goes out. The tank is drilled with 6 holes in the bottom. Right now my plan is to make two holes for overflows, two holes for returns, and two holes will only be used for water changes.

I'm sure once the stand is done, I'll be asking some questions on the filtration as well.

I guess if there's room under the stand, I could always go bigger. I just have an 80 now that is being replaced by a 180. There's no real point in saving the 80 - it would be a spare or turn into a garage tank if I don't use it for the sump.

edit to add: Photo of the tank, still on dollies from moving. Thats where it'll stay until the stand is finished.

An 80G would be fine for your setup. You will just have to design the overflow so that in the event of a power outage, that only a certain amount of water will drain for the tank.

Well, I ended up getting a nice hookup from a friend that owns a fencing company. He's making a 2" tube steel stand that should be quite beefy. And he quoted me the price of $650, which is only $50 over his cost for the steel and labor.

He's hoping to have it completed by this weekend, but if not it should be ready by next week sometime. I guess I should start looking for pumps for my sump.

i would do a 2x6 rafter style top like i did in the first pics in my thread http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=104977 i went a little overboard but there r more pics at post #23

i see alot of people doing 2x4s and they start sagging...

2x6s are very easy to work with instead of 4x4s IMO

Hey vamp, do you remember how much that stand cost to build? I may be building an 8x4x2 tank here soon, and I think that stand is very close to what I want to build...
