So my tank has been up for about 6 weeks now. The other day I had to get under it to do some maintenance I noticed that I had a lot of "stuff" at the bottom of the overflow. The LFS told me to use a stand pipe so the water didn't have to fall all the way to the bottom of the overflow making too much noise. I did ask if I should fill in the open space with bio balls or something similar. They said no. Over time this "stuff" will surly build up to intolerable levels.Should I have added some sort of space filler or do I just have to plan on cleaning the over flows? Basically it is unfiltered waste and excess food.

At the bottom of my overflow the water is really moving stuff does not sit still much. What type of water flow do you have going? Don't put Bio balls in there they will just get super super bad. Using a gurgle buster or stand pipe is just an option not needed are you trying to make it quieter or just trying to keep crud from building up?

Also are you sure it's not just algae? It can build up a little but if you have good flow really won't have build up at the bottom. Sand can get kicked up and sit in there if you have sand.

Want to stop the build up.The tank is 30 inches tall. The water only falls about an inch into the over flow. I really don't think I have any water movement at the bottom of the stand pipe. I do have sand. From under the tank it looks like crud.

Ya anything that fall in there will settle that's normal don't worry about it too much. You could always stick something in there and try string it. A stand pipe is not going to do anything. Sounds like you have just a strait pipe in the overflow or do you already have a stand pipe? You talked like your pet shop recommended one but sounds like you have one already or just a pipe or something. I bet it's sand in the bottom. Could be other stuff also though.

i put bio balls in a big media bag then stuff it down the overflow to minimize noise. it dont think it will get super super bad. only if you dont use a media bag i suppose. then it'll be hell of a time getting them out when you need too but imo i like the extra bio that it creates.

Can't post a pic.The tank sits in "pocket" in the wall. I have a pipe with some type of cover to quiet the water. Is a stand pipe different? Thought it was all the same.

Here is a stand pipe, water flow at the very bottom will always be not too much, thats normal, Putting one of these in the over flow will make the over flow quiet. Like it sounded you have as the water only falls like an inch.
