Got a 40 gallon acrylic and was given a stand that was supposedly used with this tank. The tank is 36 inches long and 15 inches wide, however the stand measures 32 inches long and 13.5 inches wide. Is this safe to have the tank approx 2 inches over each side of the stand? Or should I place a sturdy board measured the exact dimensions over the top of the stand to correct this difference? I'd like to have this tank setup this week so any help would be appreciated.

I would rebuild it. If it hangs off of the edges you're putting a lot of stress on the seams which is a big no-no on acrylic.

Yeah, that stand has bad news written all over it.

If you did do the 2x4 thing, make sure you do them in a perimeter just under the edges of the tank. Then you could plywood the top.

Thinking about adding 3 2x4's across the 36 inch stand, 1 foot apart and then adding a sheet of plywood across them, ensuring that the entire base of the tank will be covered. This should be ok right?

I would say that will work. Just make sure every part of the tank bottom is touching plywood and the ply is properly supported by the 2x4s which overhang.

I've attached a pic of what the setup looks like without any work. You can clearly see the tank is approx 1 inch longer on each side than the stand. It looks like typical particle board stand, would you guys reccomdend screwing 2x4s in or nailing them in? And the same question goes for when I apply the plywood base.

Thanks

That stand looks bad new to me too, if it was me i'd just run to Home Depot or Lowes and have a piece of 1/2 or 3/4 inch plywood cut to the size of your tank and lay it on the top of the stand, that will give you more even support than what you have now.
