Just from looking at the pics that stand can hold over 6000 pounds so the skin could be rice paper if you wanted to.

He could probably construct them out of 1x2 wood to frame doors an just attach 1/4 wood to front to look good

You can either make a frame and glue or screw the panel to the back of the frame. My personal choice, You can get fancy and make the frame and recess (rabbet cut) the frame so the back side is flush. If you are a good woodworker you can make a frame and dado cut the inside rails so the 1/4 ply fits into the groove in the frame.
Joefish--can you elaborate just a little more on the "fancy" approach? Maybe reference a simple pic? I know the words you are using (have a dado blade set myself), but can't quite picture precisely what you mean.

That's a really nice stand. I don't think that I'll be able to get that kind of quality stand made. Te second picture really helps! A picture is really worth a thousand word lol
