Started construction today....

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
One flaw I see in many tank stands on the site is highlighted below in red. The design for the most part is very well done, however there is a better way. The boards highlighted in red are there just for looks, as there is very little support below them. There is no vertical support holding these peices up. If instead the supporting legs would have been shortened 3.5", and the beam across made to be one piece, bridged by blue. The beams would be supporting the weight of the tank, and the legs would support the weight the beams are holding.

what will the internal dimensions of the tank be. I doubt it will hold more than 500 gallons. Your stand should be ok:)

Moxx,

They're screws sticking out after the fix, battery died on my screw gun. Just waiting for it to charge up and sink em.

Wyld,

There is a board spanning the entire length. As you stated they were just filler boards and not meant to carry any load.

Rally,

Between the plywood and stud thickness the overall dimensions of the inside should be around 86 x 29.5 x 31.75

Good Job. That is the same way I built mine.

I have seen 180g held up by only 4 2x4 legs with all the weight on screws. without any wood to wood support. lol

Here ya go Wyld. See where the inside board comes all the way across? Kinda hard to see from the picture.

Yeah I knew that it did, however if you shortened the other half of the leg down as well and had both beams go across one full length, and one all but to the outside two legs, then the beams will support all be functional.

the horizontal beams dont really support much of the weight though do they? I was under the impression that they are there to keep the verticle one (which do support the weight) in place and square.

The illustration isn't very good, but why waste wood, build it so that the wood you are using is functional.

The "blanks" made it easier for me to skin, and helped keep it square when I was building it. Thats worth the $4 of 2x4's to me lol

That's why I threw them in there Rally, but I see what Wyld is saying. I can just throw another 2x4 on the inside of the uprights and then it'll be semi functioning as Wyld is saying.

Well time for me to get some sleep, up early for work. I'll only really be able to work on this project on the weekends. I work 12-18 hours a day so during the week I need my sleep. Thanks for the input and advice.

Til next weekend, see ya guys.
