Looks great bud. The center support will help greatly.

I wouldn't worry about the water flowing into the side of the foam. There surface area exposed is not enough to render the rest of the foam usless. The water will easily flow over onto the top of the pad.

I am not sure about the "pre filter" which seems to be used as a height extension. I don't believe its worth it.

Oh, that's not a pre-filter. That's actually the other end of the sump from where the water enters. I put it in like that just in case the water likes to flow across the top of the pad too easily. This way it will at least run into that pad before flowing into the pump chamber (if it gets that far). The water enters from the right side of the sump in that picture, and flows to the left.
