Starter Chiclid Tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You're lucky, they're like African Convicts essentially in regards to spawning. Have your convicts spawned in your tank before?

Hello Pablo, welcome to MFK!
As Hendre said, the main problem you are going to have is that as the fish grow, the tank is going to be very cramped. The 65 is a decent size to work with but you've got a pretty heavy stock there. It will work for now while they are small, but I would re-home most of the fish sooner rather than later. The auratus can get very nasty, and having 4 males in there spells trouble. The Jack dempseys can get large (males up to a foot long) and I wouldn't keep more than 1 of them in this size tank. If you do keep a jack, your going to want to only have a few other (smaller) fish in there, as a 8-12" fish can produce a lot of waste.
Great info definitely agree I'm looking to upgrade to a 125 pretty soon by this being my first ever fish tank I've ever owned I just wanted to dive in head first and cycle something together. Any recommendations on food choice or snacks or bottom dwellers?

Suggestions on food- Any quality cichlid pellet as an every day staple. I feed New Life Spectrum, Hikari makes good stuff as well. For snacks you can give the occasional bit of frozen mysis or bloodworms, just make sure not to overdo it because the uneaten food can be pretty messy. As for bottom dwellers, Bristlenose plecos and pictus cats tend to be good choices with cichlids. I wouldn't add any new fish though until you have the stocking thinned down, or you get a new tank. Is the tank cycled yet, by the way?

Maybe list your fish in order of favourite to least so the guys can help you choose a stock for a bigger tank lf you want to go that way

Could be the convicts too. Just how big is the adult JD?

I agree with some of the other posters...choose one fish that is your must have and then make decisions about the others accordingly.

The auratus need a larger tank even by themselves, so they would be the first to go for me.
