Starting 54 gal planted tank

I'm trying to help my brother set up a planted tank, I've been fish keeping for over 20 years but have no experience with planted tanks. Anyway he's buying a easy care set of plants from Arizona aquatics. I'm in need of help with the lighting and substrate. Not sure what to buy he's got a 54 gal corner bow front tank. Also do u recommend getting a co2 system. Any help would be great thanks
