starting a 20gal saltwater, need filtration advice.

Good luck with your setup. I just made the move to saltwater as well several weeks ago, my tank is in the final stage of its cycling, it would be quite fun to use those weeks of cycling your tank by looking at which kind of damsels or cardinals you would want to buy. Here is a site that divides marine fishes and invertebrates to different species. It has a brief description of the sp. Even if your not going to buy from them, their prices are comparative to what you might see in common lfs so you can gauge how much your going to spend in advance. I understand a college kid who is an aquarist on a budget (been there!)

I would not get more than one of each of those fish in a 30g. SOME damsels in a 30g is like putting SOME some mean pitbulls in a 10x10 room.... IOW someones going to get hurt/killed.

The cardinals will just pick each other off until there is only one left. They need much more space than a 30g to live in groups.
